Feeding your new puppy

all pups eatingWhen your puppy is ready to come home and join your family he will be eating dry food. I prefer Life’s Abundance Brand, for Puppies, Small Breed.
A puppy is not introduced to soft food until four weeks of age and by six weeks of age they are eating dry food, and I start the weaning process. This is why a reputable breeder will not release a puppy before eight weeks of age. The puppy must be observed as it makes the transition from mother to dry food. My goal is to make sure the puppy feels secure and has no setbacks during this period of time.
At eight weeks of age most puppies are ready for their forever homes. The only real consideration would be if a puppy weighed less than three pounds. Alabama Havanese Kennel does not breed teacup dogs and we only breed to standard.
I feed the puppies at least four times a day unless I feel they need more. Once the puppy reaches eight weeks of age I begin to feed three times a day. Our puppies gain weight as they should and our vet keeps an eye on this to insure proper growth. All feedings are scheduled as to teach the puppies structure. First and foremost, teach your new puppy his daily routines. Where his food and water dishes are located. What times of day he will eat, where his bed is, what time he goes to bed, what time he gets up, where he goes to the bathroom, and where his toys are kept.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that it doesn’t matter HOW you teach each of these routines. It definitely does matter and it starts with the basics such as water and food. Food and water dishes should remain in one place. If you do it the right way, your puppy will be better-behaved and pleased to let you decide how you want him to fit into your family. If you use the wrong teaching method, your puppy will begin making decisions about how he wants YOU to fit into his life, and that’s a recipe for conflict and behavior problems. For this reason we do not believe in free feeding our dogs or puppies.

For the pups I feed Life’s Abundance for Small Puppies, and for my Adult dogs I use Life’s Abundance, Small Breed Adult.
