Havanese puppies playing!

Deborah Lee Bogart-Frederick is the owner of Alabama Havanese Kennel, where we raise quality Havanese puppies. I have been breading healthy happy Havanese pups for many years now.  We operate a breeding program on our small ranch. Our dogs are first and foremost, cherished members of our family.  I am a conscientious breeder and a true lover of not only this breed but all animals. I adhere to a strict code of ethics and integrity is of the upmost importance to me.   It has been a dream come true for me to raise this wonderful breed of dogs.  The Havanese is terrific companions and makes the perfect family pet. Havanese are extremely intelligent, non-shedding, hypo-allergenic, great watch dogs, loyal, and adore children just to name a few attributes! They are handled early and socialized in preparation for you.  Our puppies are sold to those with the desire for a loving pet to join their family. How we raise puppies and why an Alabama Havanese puppy is unique: Raising puppies is an absolute joy but entails much thought and commitment to do it right. Here are a few things that make our dogs unique.

Abbey and all of our babies are so smart.

Nothing is more important than exposing a young puppy to a variety of sounds, sights and smells. Because puppies develop so rapidly, there are short windows of time where socialization is most important. Socialization refers to the introduction of new sensory experiences and monitoring each puppy’s reaction so as not to induce fear. IMG_4170Very often praise accompanies the new object or sound to help the puppy associate the new experience with something wonderful. The presence of a “teacher dog”, (usually the dam) will also facilitate the puppies’ acceptance of something new and/or potentially threatening.

Our puppies are extensively socialized from the minute they are born. It is one of our primary goals during the eight weeks or so that the puppy will live here and is unique to our breeding program. Different people are invited over to meet the puppies. These include men and women, kids and the elderly. The puppies will have a different style of music played for them every day at different volumes and they are constantly exposed to the sounds and activities of a busy household. We play classical music as a trigger for the pups to know it is quiet time. They will also be introduced to horses, a donkey, large dogs, and cats. In addition to different surfaces (grass, gravel, asphalt, tile, carpet etc). There is much more to it, but because of all of the planned variation in their routines, the puppies become confident and adaptable dogs.

MY BACK STORY…

mE AND BANDITa
Bandit and I

Often people share their precious life stories with me. Sometimes it is all the joy that they have experienced in life.  Sometimes it is the loss of their dog or worse a child. Sometimes it is the loss of a spouse or significant other.  Sometimes it is sharing this wonderful breed with a family member or friend. Many of you have asked me how it is I began a Havanese dog breeding business.  Well, here is my story….

I hail from the sunshine state, Florida for those who do not remember Florida’s old tags. I am also from Marion, Alabama which will always be in my heart. I went to elementary, junior high and high school there and through Facebook have caught up with many old school mates. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and Child Psychology from Barry University, where I graduated magna cum laude, Kappa Delta Pi. My concentrated studies were in history. I began my Master’s degree but atlas fell in love and my MS took a back seat.

Through love I started working in the yachting industry at Allied Marine Group, Fort Lauderdale, Fl.  My love of boats came early on in life as my uncle owned boats and The Hyannis Port Marina, Hyannis Port, Cape Cod, Ma.  So, for me boats and boat shows were a natural.  Later we would open the first non-factory direct office for Lazzara International Yachts.  I was very fortunate to work for both Allied Marine Group and Lazzara International Yacht Sales, as I was able to experience another love…travel.  I have been to many exotic locales, Europe, Channel Islands, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, UAE, Bahamas, Canada, Caribbean, and Mexico.  I feel truly Blessed for each experience.  It was during my tenure at Lazzara that a crew member for one of our yachts introduced me to the Havanese breed.  Again, I was deeply in love with this vibrant, intelligent, beautiful breed.  I always had a great love of animals, as we maintained several horses in South Florida.  Dogs were always a must for me.

DIXIE AND I A
Dixie Belle and I

In 2007 tragedy struck as I was sitting on top of the world.  My middle child was in a severe motorcycle crash and sustained and traumatic brain injury as well as a broken back. Suddenly, working long hours to make sure my children had “everything” wasn’t so important.  Things are things, no more, no less.  My daughter, Jesse was in the hospital for five months.  During this time, I would come home from the hospital and waiting for me at the door was my Wheaton Terrier, Dixie Belle.  I would collapse and cry in her neck.  Every single day for those five months, Dixie waited for me with all the love and dedication anyone could ask for in a person or a dog. When my daughter was able to come home, I decided to relocate to Alabama. My son, RJ was attending high school at Marion Military Institute. Jesse was a great equestrian prior to the accident, so I bought a small ranch in hopes it would help her heal.  Unfortunately, Dixie (Wheaton’s are herding dogs) was struck and killed by a car.  She was laid to rest outside my bedroom window where I had a sitting area.  There I was able to sit and think of her.  It was very peaceful.  One year later I bought my first Havanese, Scamp aka, Scampy, Scamp the Tramp, Shrimp Scampi and Boo.  He was quite pampered, but I needed another Havanese to keep him company.  So, I purchased LeeLee.  And yet another love affair began.  My dogs have brought so much joy, laughter, and brilliance into my life that, just once again, it seemed natural for me to breed.  Through my breeding program I have meet so many wonderful people!  I am so thankful for each and every one of you for allowing me into your “story”. I have recently sold my ranch named Steel Magnolia (watch the movie if you haven’t already seen it, tissue or dog ready) and moved to North Carolina where I have a new smaller version of Steel Magnolia Ranch.  I have three children Michelle who resides in Massachusetts with my two granddaughters Hailee Elizabeth and Lily Grace.   My daughter Jesse who still lives in Marion, Alabama which will always be home. I certainly miss Jesse helping me with the dogs and puppies.  My son RJ attended University of Alabama, School of Engineering (ok, I am a bit proud, I have been known to break out pictures in the grocery store)! He now resides in Houston, Texas and is married to Brittani Harfield of Sugarland, Texas.  My son, RJ served in the Marine Corp, my father served in the Air Force and my stepfather served in the Navy. My son now works for Sales Force and my daughter-in-law; Brittani works for Amazon.  Thank you for your service and all those who serve our country. We offer a discount to those who have served.  Recently, my story went in a new and exciting direction, as does all our stories…I loaded up the truck and all the animals and we headed to the foothills of North Carolina.  That’s right vineyards and hiking trials. Ya’ll come see us now!! Nothing better than puppies and nature with a splash of wine swished in for good fortune.  Oh, by the way, I feel in love again….and so my story continues. Update to my story…I married the love of my life October 16, 2022. His Name is George Frederick, and he is from Wisconsin! He has lived in Germany and Mobile, Al before moving to Wilmington, NC in 2006. The first person I met that could love me and ALL MY CRITTERS! I am now Deborah Lee Bogart-Frederick!  Stay tuned for more folks!!
